The basic strategies of reading.......
One of the major differences in teaching our students to become effective readers and comprehenders of text is to equip them with good strategies.
Strategies such as;
(G.Winch, 2010)
These strategies can be encouraged by us as teachers however they most often develop over time with experience. Becoming masters of these meta-cognitive strategies eventuates in our students success as an 'executive reader'. I have devised a diagram which demonstrates how these strategies work in uni-sen (G. Winch, 2010)
Strategies such as;
- Skimming and Scanning the text to predict what the meaning will be; looking at page layout, headings, paragraph length etc. Significant aspects of the reading are selected which will lead the reader to obtain meaning.
- Sampling and Predicting the text. The reader uses various sources of information and cue systems, to predict what the meaning will be while also making use of the various types of knowledge which they have acquired such as Semantic, they can then apply this to the specific text.
- Confirming and Understanding the text, if the information all makes sense they proceed with their reading however if they are confused they move to the next step.
- Correcting errors in meaning as they occur, the reader will search the text for more information until they can comprehend the text.
