Comprehension occurs when a person reads a written text, then is able to gain meaning, to understand and to comprehend the written message (G. Winch, 2010). Studies over the last 20 years have shown a lack of reading comprehension which is present in school classrooms (A. Farstrup, 2002). This lack of reading comprehension leads me to believe that teachers are not equipped with the knowledge and skills associated with comprehension in order to successfully integrate it into their classrooms daily routine. This website has been designed to help educate beginning teachers on the theory, skills and strategies which are associated with teaching comprehension in primary schools.
