Below I have constructed two tables which describe a set of skills which readers need to acquire in order to become effective readers who interact with texts to achieve particular purposes. As teachers we need to firstly teach our students these skills and secondly encourage them to use all of these practices interactively to effectively comprehend all types of texts.
